Unit 3: Diet and Food

Bread, rice, pasta and other cereals provide our body with carbohydrates. Carbohydrates give our body energy.

Fruit and vegetables provide us with essential vitamins and minerals. These vitamins help us grow, develop, work and stay healthy.

Meat, fish, eggs and pulses give us proteins and vitamins. Proteins help your body to grow and repair itself.

Milk, yoghurt and cheese are dairy products. They give us proteins, vitamins and minerals.

Oils and fats contain lipids. Lipids give us energy. Oils anbd fats also help our body to absorb some vitamins.

Exercise

Exercise helps our muscles and our heart. It also makes us flexible. We should try to do some exercise every day because it makes us healthy and look and feel better.

Exercise Safely

If we don't exercise carefully we can break a bone or hurt a muscle.

Warm up to prepare your muscles and prevent muscle injury.

Choose an appropiate and safe place to exercise, like a tennis court to play tennis.

When you sweat you lose liquids. Drink water fifteen minutes before exercise and then every twenty minutes.

Wear appropiate safety equipment for the exercise you are doing, like a helmet or knee pads.

Wear comfortable shoes. These will help you avoid injury to your feet.

Stretch after exercise. Hold each stretch for about 30 seconds. Stretch and breathe slowly.

Hygiene

Germs are very small living things that can only be seen under the microscope. When they enter our body they consume nutrients and produce toxins. Toxins can cause disease. Many diseases caused by germs spread from person to person.

We can avoid germs by:

1. Washing our hands before eating, after using the bathroom and after sneezing or coughing.

2. Brushing our teeth after every meal.

3. Not putting things in our mouth.

4. Covering our nose and mouth when we sneeze or cough.

We need to rest and sleep

After we study or play our body needs to recover. We need to sleep every night. When we sleep our body slows down and uses less energy so it can repair itself. Too little sleep affects growth and our immune system.
