Ordinal Numbers

We use ordinal numbers to say the position of someone or something in relation to the position of someone or something else.

Ana was first (1st), Maria was second (2nd) and Suzy was third (3rd).

We also use ordinal numbers to say the date.

My birthday is on the 7th of October.

Today is the 21st of January.

All regular verbs end in -ed in the past simple and past participle affirmative but as usual there are some rules.

Most of the time we just add -ed.

Want     Wanted

Wash     Washed

Listen    Listened

However, when the verb ends in -e we just add -d

Live      Lived

Love     Loved

Hate    Hated

When the verb ends in a consonant and the letter -y we lose the -y and add - ied.

Copy    Copied

Study   Studied

Tidy      Tidied

When the verb ends in a vowel and the letter -y we just add -ed.

Play            Played

Destroy     Destroyed

Show          Showed

Finally, if the verb ends in a vowel and a consonant we double the consonant before adding -ed.

Travel    Travelled

Stop       Stopped

Cancel   Cancelled

In Negative and Interrogative regular verbs follow the same rules as irregular verbs in the past simple.

Last week I played with my friends. We were in the park. After the park, we walked to the shops. While we walked we talked but we didn't walk very fast. At the shops we looked at many things but we didn't buy anything because it was all very expensive. We stayed at the shops for thirty minutes. After the shops we decided to go home. I enjoyed my day.
